Athlete Spotlight – Tia W.

This month, we had the chance to “sit down” with Tia and chat about what motivated her to give CrossFit a try and what has kept her coming back for months on end!

Tia is a busy mom of two small children, yet consistently makes it to the gym throughout the week, and it shows! She has most recently hit new personal records on several lifts and gymnastics movements. We couldn’t be more excited for the progress she’s made and the progress that’s sure to come!

Why do you do CrossFit?

“I first started CrossFit when I was 6 months postpartum and was introduced to it by my husband. I was struggling with postpartum anxiety at the time and he brought me along to a class with him. After my first class I felt like CrossFit would be something that would really help me along my postpartum journey. Fast forward 7 months later and it’s what I look forward to almost every day. It has helped me so much mentally and physically. It gives me an hour a day to myself where I don’t have to think about anything but what I am doing in that moment and just enjoy a good sweat session.”

Why do you do CrossFit at our gym?

“I initially chose CrossFit Artifact because that’s where my husband started his CrossFit journey and I figured I’d tag along too. Since starting I am glad I did. I’ve met a lot of great people and have learned so much from the coaches. I enjoy the atmosphere at this gym and look forward to each class.”

What were you most afraid of when you first joined our gym?

“My biggest fear was not being strong enough and not knowing how to do most movements. I quickly learned that workouts/movements can be scaled to your ability and that no one judges you for not being able to do a certain weight or movement. Everyone in the gym is very encouraging of one another which is great to be a part of.”

What were you looking for in a gym?

“I honestly have never really been a part of a gym and would just workout at home so I wasn’t sure what to expect when walking into a CrossFit gym. I can say I made the right choice and found a gym with a great atmosphere. Everyone seems like family and are just so fun to be around.”

What one thing got you to take the initial leap and sign up?

“After my first drop in class I realized that I needed more time for myself, especially with two young girls. I signed up after my first class. Taking the time to focus on myself even just one hour a day has made me a better wife, mother and person… I think haha.”

What were your primary goals when you first started?

“My primary goal at the time was to try and tone this ol’ mom bod of mine.”

What was your biggest challenge keeping you from achieving those goals?

“I think my biggest challenge would be figuring out what days I could go to the gym and who could watch the girls. I am very lucky though, and between my mom, mother-in-law, and sister I have been able to make time for the gym.”

Did you try anything in the past to achieve your goals that didn’t work?

“I’ve always worked out at home and would typically run or do HIIT workouts. I never really saw results with that because I never pushed myself that hard. With CrossFit I’ve realized how much I can do and how hard I can push myself during a workout, and, with that I’ve seen results.”

What are your goals now?

“My goals now are to build strength. I would like to become more confident in my lifts and push myself more with weights.”

What is your favorite thing about CrossFit Artifact?

“The people. It’s such a wide range of different people, but you are able to connect with every single one somehow, someway, and I like that. Everyone is friendly, uplifting, and encouraging.”

What is your favorite lift OR what has been your favorite workout?

“My favorite lift would be the deadlift. THERE ARE NO FAVORITE WORKOUTS!!!! Just kidding haha I enjoy any workout that has deadlifts and burpees (gross and psychotic.. I know).” We also love burpees, Tia! 🤫

What was the most rewarding moment you’ve experienced at the gym?

“My most rewarding moment would be when I was able to do Toes to Bar during a Saturday morning partner workout and was actually able to string three of them together in a row. Everyone who was on the rowers behind me started cheering. It was very uplifting and nice to have a little cheer squad.”
